Default do I have to pay taxes in my home country if I am tax-excempt on a J1 visa?

I feel kind of stupid asking that question, but could not find a clear answer anywhere online:
do I have to pay taxes in my home country (Germany) if I was tax-excempt on a J1 visa for one year (I'm back now)?

For this you have to find out from a Tax Person (CA or CPA) in Germany.

Agree that you should check with a German tax expoet, but most countries do NOT tax income earned outside of their borders.

It's been a while this thread was posted, but I'm in a very similar situation now and can't find an answer to the same question django had (Do I have to pay taxes in Germany on my US postDoc income if I claim the US tax exemption under the tax treaty?). Did you find out how that worked, django? I would appreciate your advice!

Thanks!

Default Not Sure

Generally, most foreign countries do NOT tx income earned outside of their country's borders, but you need to contact a German tax expert to be sure.
