J1 Student - PHD - Post Doc Taxes - Malaysia US Tax Treaty Benefits
As a J1 Student you are exempt from FICA Taxes (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) for upto five years. But you still have to pay Federal and State Income Taxes. For upto five years of your stay in United States as a J1 student, you have to file Form 1040NR and Form 8843. There is currently no separate Tax Treaty between Malaysia and United States, based on IRS Publication 901. Hope this helps!

Minor misprint above:
You are exempt from Fica (Social Security and Medicare) taxes, but you MUST pay federal, state and local INCOME taxes.
