My wife has just applied (march'09) for an ITIN and the guy at the IRS office tells us that it may take a while to get the ITIN number.
Is it possible to open and fund a traditional spousal IRA account with an "Applied For" ITIN status? This is so that we can claim the IRA deduction in our 2008 return... When the ITIN comes, we will update the account. |

You can do it IF the IRA Custodian cooperates.
She MUST have an federal ID number to open an IRA. The IRA custodian may be willing to accept the contribution and hold it until the ITIN comes back from the IRS, then log it as being received PRIOR to 15 April 2009. IMHO, your best bet to get this done is using Charles Schwab, who is known to be foreign national friendly.
