Dear all,
This is a very desperate post. I arrived to NY, USA last August 2009. I have an F1 visa and I am in graduate school with a scholarship from my own country to study in the USA. My question is: If my money comes from my country, should USA refund me all my taxes? What forms should I fill up? Where do I include my scholarship information? I was filling 1040NR-EZ but I don't know where to place about my scholarship info. Should the school have sent me a special tax form? I only have the W2. Please!!!! I'd be very grateful to receive any helpppp!!!! |

For a non-resident alien, ANY money from a foreign source is NOT subject to U.S. taxes.
If you have a W-2, that money by definition is U.S.-sourced income. Hence, W-2 income IS subject to U.S. taxes. Scholarships and grants are reported on Line #12 of Form 1040NR or Line #5 of Form 1040NR-EZ, but ONLY IF that scholarship or grant is considered to be taxable income, which, in your case, probably does NOT apply. The scholarship and grants that are NOT taxable are reported on Line #8 of Form 1040NR-EZ.
